Blog #4: Augmented Reality

AR in Marvel

Personally when I hear AR, first thing I think of is our fallen hero “Iron Man”. Through out the Iron Man series as well as several of other avenger movies AR is demonstrated in a very expressive fashion. When it comes to Mr.Stark himself, majority of his house uses AR technology, which allows for him to access this technology without additional gadgets while in his house (Marvel AR, n.d.). There are various iterations of this technology through out the series, from creating a suit that relies on AR to a fully function AI build on the bases of AR (Marvel AR, n.d.). Although all of this technology is amazing and breathtaking, we are years and years from developing something of this caliber. All but one. You see although in the film it is though of as a failed project the AR glasses system is the closest we’ve seen to movie style AR. The system is known as Binary Augmented Retro Framing (BARF) and is used in the example for patient therapy allowing them to live out memories as if they were happening (Marvel AR, n.d.). Although laughed at in the movie, I believe that currently this system would not only help in a hospital setting but a learning environment as well. First, as talked in the previous blog students would be able to dive deep in the learning environment and experience it as if it is actually effecting them. Those who suffer with learning disabilities like ADHD or dyslexia would be able to completely adapt to their learning environment. Finally, as we have seen in our current world where COVID has forced us into a life of online learning. Where the information is not retained as well and amount of resources that make it a great learning environment is limited. However with the use of AR glasses students and teacher could all meet in a simulated environment where they could interreact and learn as if in a classroom. More, students who feel sick can participate from home instead of missing lectures and playin catch up later.
